For the rooms your ducts never reached.
Most homes around here have one: the bonus room over the garage that turns into an oven by 2 PM, the workshop you stop using every July, the sunroom that works three seasons out of four. A ductless mini-split fixes that room without touching your ductwork. And since Bender builds additions for a living, we've put mini-splits in more bonus rooms than we can count.
The problems mini-splits were made for
Bonus rooms and FROGs
The finished room over the garage sits at the end of the duct run with sun on three sides. It's the most common comfort complaint we hear, from Trent Woods to Swansboro. One wall unit ends it for good.
Additions and sunrooms
When we build your addition, a mini-split usually beats stretching the existing ductwork. It adds no load to your current system, gets its own thermostat, and runs cheaper. One contract covers the room and the comfort.
Garages and workshops
Condition the shop and you use it twelve months a year instead of six. A mini-split does it without ductwork and costs less to run than most people expect.
Whole-home ductless
Older homes without ducts, and cottages where the crawl-space ducts have rotted out, can run entirely on multi-zone mini-splits. Efficiency is about as good as residential equipment gets.
Manufactured home retrofits
When a package unit dies, converting to mini-splits is sometimes cheaper to run and more reliable than another package unit. We price both and let you compare.
In-law suites and rentals
Separate zones with separate controls. Everyone sets their own temperature and nobody argues about the thermostat.
Installed like it belongs there
A mini-split install is half HVAC work and half finish carpentry. The lineset routing, the wall penetrations, and where the condenser sits decide whether the finished job looks factory or looks bolted on. This is where our remodeling side shows. Penetrations get sealed and flashed, line-hide gets matched to your trim, the condenser goes where it can be serviced and stay out of the salt spray, and any drywall we touch gets patched like we were never there. Most single-zone installs are done in a day.
- Single-zone installs usually finished in one day
- Dedicated circuit run by our own licensed electricians
- Condensate routed properly so nothing stains your siding
- Mitsubishi, Daikin, and other leading brands
What they cost to run
Mini-splits are among the most efficient heating and cooling machines sold, and conditioning one room costs a lot less than cranking the whole house's system to rescue it. Install pricing depends on the zone count, the lineset routing, and the electrical work, so we quote per project, free and in writing. Many mini-splits qualify for the same Energy Saver NC and utility rebates as central heat pumps, because that's what they are.
Straight answers
How much does mini-split installation cost?
It depends on how many zones you need, where the lineset has to run, and what electrical work is involved, so we quote each project in writing, free. One warning while you shop around: lineset quality, electrical work, and mounting are exactly where cheap installs cut corners, and those corners are where the failures show up a few summers later.
Do mini-splits heat too, or just cool?
They heat too. A mini-split is a heat pump, and modern ones heat comfortably through an Eastern NC winter without any backup.
Mini-split or window unit for my bonus room?
The window unit costs less on day one and loses every day after that. It’s louder, weaker, a security hole, and about half as efficient. Over a few summers the mini-split usually wins on total cost, and it heats in the winter, which the window unit won’t.
Are they loud?
The indoor unit is about as loud as a quiet library. Most people stop noticing it within a week. The outdoor unit runs quieter than a normal AC condenser.
Can you add a mini-split to the addition Bender is building for us?
Yes, and it’s usually the smartest way to condition an addition. We fold it into the same project: one schedule, one contract, one warranty conversation. Mention it to your project manager or ask for it in the estimate.
